A Long Time Absent!

November 18, 2009

Suddenly realised I have not been here for a while! So much to do. I am tending to write more in the Journal Page of my website; http://www.jennymeehan.co.uk at the moment.

Well, here I am for now. I am concentrating on working with both clay and paint. This is bringing me into a place I felt deprived of with my photographic art work. There is a new sensuality and contact with materials in my work which I love and I am learning to trust my instincts more. I am learning to allow the interior of my life to influence me as much as the exterior… I would say my work is influenced very much by what I see around me, but also now I am exploring some interesting relationships between my imagination the world which surrounds me. I have brought some pigments, and I am experimenting with some different types of paint too. I have had to leave my poetry writing for now, as there is not enough time, but I am enjoying the poetic qualities possible in visual expression…I’m so excited by what’s happening, my only grave sadness is the limited amount of time I am able to spend with my art.

Image is one of the pots I made from terracotta at a most excellent course at West Dean College this November. I learnt so much and I am so grateful to Carolyn for all I learnt over that weekend. It’s so important to have good training and good tuition when you are an artist if you want to progress, and I have taken some priceless input away…most importantly for me, a sense of the importance of experimentation and also artistic determination…which does not say to itself “Ah, well, I can easily change it if it doesn’t work out” but says “Go for it…whatever happens” It’s that important step into the unknown…Anish Kapoor mentioned it in the very good BBC One programme last night “Imagine” which was about his work and his exhibition which runs at the Royal Academy. Holding the importance of this fundamental truth about creativity is a great help to me at the moment.
